Bug Spray and Back Up Plans
While tidying up the Oleander beds over the 4th of July weekend, I spotted a line of ants marching along the edge of our neighbor’s driveway. Seemed harmless enough at first—but it caught my attention.
So this morning, when I stepped outside again—what did I grab? Bug spray.
Not because I enjoy using it (I don’t), but because I knew what was likely coming next. When you notice the early signs, you act before it turns into something bigger. That’s just common sense.
And it got me thinking—so much of retirement planning is really just that: smart prevention.
Like bug spray, a solid financial plan isn’t flashy. It’s not something people brag about. But when the real problems show up—and they will—you’ll be glad it’s already in place.
Nowhere is this more true than in planning for health care and long-term care. It’s the part no one wants to talk about.
“We’re fine for now.” “We’ll deal with it later.” “That won’t happen to us.”
But delaying these conversations is like waiting to spray for ants until they’ve taken over the house.
I’ve seen it too many times—families who had done everything else right, except plan for what would happen if one of them got seriously ill or couldn’t manage things anymore.
The fallout? Stress. Rushed choices. Savings drained. Tension between loved ones. It’s heartbreaking—and it’s avoidable.
That’s why when I work with clients, we look beyond investments and income. We talk about:
- Who would step in if you couldn’t manage your affairs?
- How would care be paid for—without derailing your retirement?
- Do your legal documents reflect your current wishes?
- And are the protections you have today actually enough?
These aren’t easy conversations—but they are essential. Because ignoring them doesn’t protect you from the risks. It only leaves you more exposed when they show up.
So if you’ve been putting off a conversation about health care or long-term care, consider this your gentle reminder to begin. A thoughtful financial plan includes these conversations—so you can enjoy retirement without the worry of what might be crawling around the corner.
No need to panic. Just be prepared.
And if you’d like a hand with that—I’m here to help, (480) 513-1830.
