Could a Roth IRA save you thousands in retirement? Thumbnail

Could a Roth IRA save you thousands in retirement?

It’s funny how often Sheri and I end up talking about planning for one's retirement—even when we swear we’re not going to. We’ll be sitting at dinner, catching up on the day, and one of us will say, “Did you see that article about taxes on retirement accounts?” or “What’s the deadline again for Roth contributions?”

Part of it is just who we are. But lately, Roth IRAs keep popping up. Not just in our house—friends bring them up, clients ask about them, even our daughters have questions.

I get why. The older we get, the more appealing tax-free income becomes—especially when tax rates don’t seem headed down anytime soon.

A Roth IRA is different because you contribute after-tax dollars. Then, if you follow the rules, every penny you withdraw later—earnings included—is tax-free. That’s huge.

And it gets better:

  • Roth withdrawals don’t push you over Social Security tax thresholds.
  • They don’t raise your Medicare premiums.
  • They don’t show up as taxable income like traditional IRA withdrawals.

For many retirees, Roth income is “quiet money”—money that doesn’t trigger extra taxes or fees.

Of course, it’s not always as simple as it sounds. There are income limits, contribution caps, and timing rules. You can’t just move everything over without understanding the consequences. For some, a Roth conversion makes sense; for others, it doesn’t.

What I’ve seen time and again is how valuable it is to at least know your options. To stop assuming it’s too late, too complicated, or not for you. Sometimes small moves—made early—can save you thousands later.

That’s why the topic keeps coming up. Not because anyone’s looking for loopholes, but because we’re all just trying to keep more of what we’ve worked so hard to build.

If you’ve ever wondered whether a Roth IRA could work for you, don’t leave it as a question mark. A quick conversation could uncover opportunities you didn’t know you had. 480-513-1830
