Highway to the Danger Zone!

Highway to the Danger Zone!

If you’re like me, you can’t read those words without immediately thinking of the 80’s blockbuster Top Gun or its high-octane sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

Have you ever wondered what life is like at the actual Top Gun school?

I will admit—and I’m sure this comes as a shock—that I have no expertise when it comes to piloting fighter jets, so I can’t speak to the more technical details. But one interesting thing I do know is that, apparently, the Top Gun school is not interested in references to the original movie. So much so, in fact, that pilots are fined $5 each time they quote it.

Seems a little harsh to me! How are you supposed to let someone know when you feel “the need for speed” or that they “can be your wingman anytime”?

As it turns out, the rule is in place to help ensure that a proper level of professionalism is maintained, and silly movie quotes could theoretically get in the way of that goal.

Seeing as I have no experience training fighter pilots, I’ll have to defer to the experts on this one.

However, when it comes to money, I have plenty of experience and expertise to share. I’d like to propose a $5 fine any time I catch you espousing any of these tired money-related tropes (obviously I can’t actually fine you, but just imagine me shaking my head disapprovingly):

  • “I don’t have enough money to bother investing or trying to grow my savings.”
  • “I’m too young to worry about retirement planning. I’ll get to it later.”
  • “I can’t really afford this purchase, but that’s what credit cards are for, right?”
  • “I’m not sure about the tax implications…I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.”

And my favorite... " I won't need Long-Term Care!"

...and on and on. I could fill an entire book with all the well-intentioned but ultimately misguided things I’ve heard from clients, friends, and family about their finances. I would love the opportunity to help you avoid falling victim to these or any other potential mistakes as you map out your financial future.

Give me a call at (480) 513-1830 or book a spot on my calendar, and I’ll help make sure that you never go anywhere near the financial Danger Zone.

Warmly, Charles
